Open Pit
A mining process whereby the target mineral is extracted from the ground by means of the removal of overburden from a seam of the mineral, as opposed to underground mining; or any mining at or near the surface. Also called strip mining; placer mining, opencast; opencut mining; open-pit mining. Molycorp no longer extracts molybdenum from the open pit, but uses underground block caving techniques.
